Avatar: The Last Airbender – Rediscover It

I hope that Tim and I can find a way to watch this show when it airs (since we don't have cable). We really enjoy the Avatar series overall, as do our children. It is a wonderful and imaginatively written cartoon. This article was published February 21.

My husband and I search for Netflix streamable content that is appropriate for the entire family. Trying to find a balance between kid appropriate and enjoyable to the parents is sometimes a task, but we found a good balance in Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series is well worth checking out during the holiday week, when you and your family might be lacking in lazy day viewing options.

Avatar is a Nickelodeon show that aired from 2005-2008. The series preimered in three seasons, or ‘books’,Water, Earth, and Fire. The series follows Aang, a young boy who after a 100+ years frozen under water must face his destiny as Avatar and master the four elements to take down the dreaded Fire Nation.

A sequal to the series is scheduled to air sometime in 2011. From everything I have read, the series will continue the story seventy years after the Fire Book ended and follow the Avatar after Aang: a girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra.

If you are already an Avatar fan, there are quite a few projects and games available to check out. There are patterns on Ravelry for an amigurumi Appa and an air bending hat. There are are also games available for different platforms including XBox, Nintendo DS, PS2, and Wii.

If you are like me and like DVD extras, Avatar: The Last Airbender (The Art of the Animated Series) is sort of like extras in book form. Also, The Last Airbender: Prequel: Zuko’s Story is one of several books exploring a story line that didn’t happen within the timeline of the series.

All activities are appropriate for the winter weather and cabin fever-affected.
